University of Basrah organizes a seminar on the study of geotechnical and mineralogical properties of loading layers in Qurna district

The college of science at the University of Basrah organized a seminar on the study of geotechnical and mineralogical properties of loading layers from selected sites in Qurna District, northern Basra province, southern Iraq. The seminar aimed to highlight the presentation of the results of geotechnical investigations in various areas of the Qurna district, in addition to evaluating the mineral properties of the soil, in order to determine the impact of minerals on the geometric behavior of the soil. The seminar, which was attended by master's student Zeinab Hassan, included a detailed presentation of the results of a field and laboratory study that included five sites in Qurna district, north of Basra governorate, in which the soil was evaluated from the geotechnical side, and mineral analysis was carried out to determine the types and proportions of clay and non-clay minerals, and montmorillonite was the predominant mineral among clay minerals, which explained the swelling behavior of the soil in some sites..The researcher discussed the impact of this behavior on the stability of facilities and possible deformations, emphasizing the importance of prior engineering improvements.
