The Department of Chemistry at the College of Science organized a seminar about the biological activity of some newly prepared organic compounds.
These new dyes were prepared from selected sulfa drugs (sulfathiazole, sulfadiazine) by converting them to diazonium salt followed by coupling reaction with 3-ethoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldethade in alkaline medium, then condensation of azo dye A1 with sulfathiazole , sulfadiazine and substituted amino compounds , forming five new azo-azomethine compounds (SbA1, SbA11, SbA12, SbA13, SbA14),as well as, condensation of azo dye A2 with sulfathiazole, sulfadiazine and some substituted amine compounds yielding four new azo-azomethine (SbA2, SbA21, SbA22, SbA23). All these prepared compounds were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, 1HNMR spectroscopy EI-Mass spectra and C.H.N analyses . The study showed that the prepared compounds possess good antioxidant activity compared to Vit.C . Also the antimicrobial activity of these prepared compounds have been studies in vitro for their antibacterial activity aganinst two types of bacteria, namely Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, as well as against two types of fungi, Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans .
