The Department of Ecology at the College of Science, University of Basra, participated in Global Entrepreneurship Week with several projects.

These included a project by faculty member Abrar Amir Thahir on using certain fungi to produce bioethanol from agricultural waste. This bioethanol is used as an alternative and environmentally friendly energy source. Another project, by faculty member Noor Mahmoud Ahmed, focused on converting feathers from poultry farms into animal feed using bacteria that produce the keratinase enzyme. This method reduces waste costs and ensures safe disposal, minimizing pollution from burning and landfilling. A third project, by faculty member Inam Abdul-Amir Abdul-Hussein and others, involved developing a smart device to test water salinity before it is pumped into household tanks. This device is used to protect the underground environment of homes. The event was attended by the President of the University of Basra, Professor Dr. Muhannad Jawad Al-Asadi, the Dean of the College of Science, Professor Dr. Ali Abdul-Imam Al-Riyahi, and a number of faculty members.

In his opening remarks, Al-Asadi emphasized that the university has become a fertile environment for investing in intellectual capital and transforming research ideas into successful commercial projects that serve Basra Governorate and Iraq.
