Structural controls on karstic development: Seismic analysis involving Tharthar depression and Merjan Oil Field
The study, published in the journal Physics and Chemistry of the Earth, classified under the scopes Q1 and sitescore 6.0 absorbers, aims to reconstruct a high-resolution karst compositional map of the talathar depression and the Marjan field in central-western Iraq, emphasizing the impact of the lake vector Rift system. The work combines regional tectonic mapping and seismic feature analysis, geochemical information, and fracture permeability to estimate structural control over Karst development.
The results showed that the lake Rift system is dominated by both the formation of the talker surface and the development of networks of subsurface karst channels under the Marjan field. Compositional evidence included fault geometry, karst channels, feature variability, and kinetic stress analysis, while the Rose-daycram diagram indicates a similar strike direction of about 350 degrees for surface faults and subsurface karst. The results suggest that surface fault mapping can be used to help identify structurally controlled karst targets and reduce exploration risks at extensional sites.
