The University of Basrah holds a lecture on genetic scissors_ Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2020

The polymer group presented within its scientific season in the Department of Chemistry - College of Science, an electronic lecture  "An overview of the Genetic scissors: The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2020" by Assist. Prof. Dr Zainab Shakir Al-Ali on the FCC. The lecture aims to explain the new discovery in detail, its importance and its most prominent applications.
The lecture included giving an overview of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, recalling some important genetic concepts such as genes and nucleic acids, DNA and RNA, and clarifying the difference between gene and genome. The lecture explained the mechanics of CRISPR-CAS 9, or the genetic scissors, and its important applications in solving problems such as agricultural, animal and aquatic pests, cancerous and genetic diseases, and others.
The lecture recommended the need to pay attention to the new discovery and start applying it in the university's laboratories to keep pace with the development taking place in the world.
