The Department of Ecology at the College of Science at the University of Basra organized a seminar on the use of fungi in the bioremediation of heavy elements.
The seminar, in which student Zahraa Saad Lazem lectured, aimed to find efficient types of fungi that have the ability to accumulate heavy elements and remove them from the environment to be used in bioremediation.
The seminar addressed the isolation and diagnosis of fungi from some soils in Basra Governorate and testing their ability to accumulate heavy elements in solid media and studying some factors affecting fungal growth and applying bioremediation of heavy elements in soil by fungi to determine their ability to treat heavy elements in contaminated soils.
The seminar recommended studying new fungal species for use in treatment and improving the effectiveness of fungi such as Aspergillus niger by providing appropriate conditions to improve its growth.
