The College of Science at the University of Basra organized a workshop on ( Plastic-eating fungi ) , which was presented by Professor Dr. Najwa Muhammad Jamil Ali Abu Majdad. The workshop aimed to clarify the role of Plastic-eating fungi break down plastic materials by fungi, which are microorganisms capable of decomposing plastic materials because they contain enzymes that break down plastic and convert it into environmentally friendly raw materials , which contributes to reducing plastic pollution. Some species work, such as Aspergillus, Penicillium, Alternaria break down the chemical bonds in plastic and convert it into less harmful materials for the environment. While there are other types of fungi that have the ability to produce recyclable plastic through fermentation processes, while some fungi are used with water filters to reduce plastic pollution in seas and oceans. Therefore , discovering the role of fungi in breaking down plastic is promising in developing sustainable solutions for disposing of plastic waste .
