The college of science at the University of Basrah organized a seminar on the study of geotechnical and mineralogical properties of loading layers from selected sites in Qurna District, northern Basra province, southern Iraq. The seminar aimed to shed light on how to conduct geotechnical investigations in different areas of the Qurna district, in addition to evaluating the mineral properties of the soil, in order to determine the impact of minerals on the geometric behavior of the soil. The seminar, in which master's student Zainab Hassan Ali attended, included a study on the geotechnical and mineralogical properties of soil layers in Qurna district, north of Basrah governorate. The study included the analysis of geometric stratigraphic columns for each site to determine the order of layers and their characteristics. The consistency of cohesive soils and the compactness of non-cohesive soils were evaluated, in addition to the study of chemical properties and their impact on engineering behavior . XRD and SEM-EDAX techniques were used to determine the Constituent minerals of the soil. The study highlights the importance of analyzing soil and mineral properties to improve the sustainability of facilities and reduce geotechnical risks in the region.
