The College of Science at the University of Basrah organized a scientific lecture on photosynthesis in higher plants and its effective role in the survival of living organisms and in improving the environment. The lecture, presented by the lecturer, Prof. Dr. Majid Abdulhameed Ibrahim, dealt with the process of photosynthesis being an important biological and physiological process in the continuation of life on Earth by providing the food chain for living organisms and through its role in improving the environment, processing global warming, and the natural balance of oxygen gas released from the process of photosynthesis into the atmosphere, fixing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and reducing its accumulation in the stratosphere, which causes global warming. The lecture discussed the subject of light and dark phase interactions, the multiple carbon dioxide fixation pathways, the reasons for their multiplicity, and their role in the continuation of life on Earth. The lecture aimed to determine the importance of increasing green space in Iraq to activate photosynthesis's role in providing agricultural products improving the environment through the natural balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide gases and combating desertification and global warming. The lecture recommended increasing the areas of vegetation cover in Iraq by planting trees, shrubs, and green spaces, establishing gardens and public parks, establishing windbreaks on the outskirts of cities, and planting economic crops.
