The Department of Ecology at the College of Science at the University of Basra organized a discussion session on the biodiversity of spiders on wetland plants in the eastern Hammar Marsh in Basra Governorate, southern Iraq.
The session, which was lectured by graduate student/master's degree student Rawaa Khaled Abdul Razzaq, aimed to demonstrate the importance of environmental conditions and vegetation cover in the diversity and presence of spiders in the wetland environment and the importance of these invertebrates in biological control programs and their distinctive role in food chains.
The session discussed the presence of seven species of spiders belonging to four families: two of the species are recorded for the first time in Iraq.
The study recommended the need to continue studies on the biodiversity of spiders in the eastern Hammar Marsh region due to the limited scientific information and the importance of these species by adopting them in biological control programs.
