Master discussion at the University of Basrah on (The geotechnical evaluation of bearing strata in Thi-Qar governorate)

The Department of Geology at the College of Science discussed a master's thesis entitled (Geotechnical Evaluation of Loading Layers in Selected Areas of Dhi Qar Governorate). The researcher's thesis, Saja Majed Abdel-Sada, aims to calculate the depth of the layers with sufficient load capacity to carry the piles in Dhi Qar Governorate, draw the geometric stratigraphic sequence of the load-bearing layers, and calculate some geotechnical properties by indirect methods based on -valueN and make a 3D-profile for some geotechnical properties.
The study included conducting a standard penetration test at different depths in the body to measure the standard penetration resistance (N-value) in different soils according to the method adopted in the British Standard (BS 5930: 1981). Soil samples in the study area were classified according to the Unified Soil Classification and according to the standard. (ASTM D 2487 -83) based on the results of particle size analysis and the Atterberg limits.
The results concluded that the geotechnical investigations indicate that the soils of the study area are divided into two main types of loading layers: the first is cohesive soils represented by alluvial-clay soils, and the second is non-cohesive soils represented by alluvial sand soils, and that the property of unlimited compressive strength has a direct relationship with the penetration resistance values. The values are that the region needs to conduct some treatments to improve the soil by humping or replacing cohesive soils to ensure the stability and safety of the facilities with shallow foundations to be built in the region.
