PhD discussion at the University of Basrah entitled (Using GRACE satellite data to study the sustainability of water resources in Iraq)

The Department of Geology at the College of Science discussed a PhD thesis entitled (Using GRACE satellite data to study the sustainability of water resources in Iraq). The researcher's thesis, Jawad Shteiwi Zughairali, aims to use GRACE satellite data to predict the trend of changing the total ground water storage (TWS) for Iraq for the period from 2002 until now, and to calculate the sustainability of ground water storage using three indicators: reliability, resiliency, and vulnerability.
The study included downloading satellite data and conducting some preliminary operations on it to prepare it for the next stage and estimating changes in the total terrestrial storage spatially and temporally for the period from 2002 until now throughout Iraq, in addition to studying the sustainability of ground water using indicators of the efficiency of the water system such as reliability, flexibility and sensitivity.
The results revealed that there is a general negative trend of decreasing the ground water mass throughout Iraq, as it was found that there are three periods of land storage changes during the studied period, and values showed that sustainability in general is low and sustainability in southern Iraq is better than in northern and central Iraq due to the high water depletion in the middle And the north, which is represented by agricultural uses.
