The lecturer in the Department of Ecology at the College of Science at the University of Basra, Dr.Makia M. Al-Hejuje, participated in the Second International Conference on Environment and Marine Sciences, which was held at the College of Science.

The participation included a lecture in collaboration with Zainab Ali Ahmed entitled Assessment of organic pollution levels in The Eastern Hammar marsh - southern Iraq.

The lecture aimed to assess the state of organic pollution in the waters of the Eastern Hammar marsh using OPI index.

The study recommended the application of the OPI as organic pollution index in the water classification as it gives a clear indication of the state of organic water pollution ... The study also recommended activating environmental laws to maintain the quality of good water for the marshes and prevent the release of organic pollutants and sewage into the marshes before they are treated.
