The College of Science at Basra University has organized a seminar on biodegradation of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) by fungi isolated from landfill soils.

The seminar, which is delivered by the Master’s student, Marwah Sabeeh Khalaf, aims to test the ability of fungi to biodegrade of the low-density polyethene in a laboratory manner.

The seminar has dealt with biodegradation tests of LDPE by the fungus Aspergillus niger and Stachybotryssp with the addition of glucose in liquid media under optimal conditions for growth for a period of 90 days.

The study has recommended work to encourage future projects focusing on recycling plastic materials in order to get benefit from them economically instead of putting them out and accumulating them in the environment.
