A Ph. D thesis at the college of Science / University of Basrah (Molecular and Histopathological Investigation of Coccidian Parasites, with Emphasis on Toxoplasma gondii, in Clinical Tissue Specimens and Assessment of Trace Element Levels in Women with Toxoplasmosis), and showed the researcher's thesis (Marwa Abdulhussein Hassan).
The study investigated five coccidian parasites in human tissue tumors, respiratory specimens, Toxoplasma gondiiseroprevalence, and serum trace elements. T. gondii showed the highest tissue distribution, reaching 40% in the thyroid gland, 25% in the ovary, 23% in the uterus, and 20% in lymph nodes. Cyclospora cayetanensis was detected in reproductive and renal tissues, representing the first worldwide record of extraintestinal tissue infection. T. gondii DNA was also detected in tuberculosis-negative sputum samples. Seropositivity reached 21% and was associated with age, occupational status, and chronic diseases. No significant differences were found in trace elements. These findings offer a ray of hope for reducing unnecessary surgical removal of important organs if infection can be diagnosed and treated before surgery.
