The Department of Ecology at the College of Science aimed to highlight the environmental significance of diatoms and their current and future applications in various fields.
The workshop, presented by Dr. Maitham Abdullah Ghali, a faculty member in the Department of Ecology, included a review of the most important environmental benefits of diatoms, as well as the key areas in which they are used as raw materials.
The workshop also addressed the applications of diatoms in biofuel production, as carriers for pharmaceuticals, and as a source of low-cost pure silica.
The workshop recommended focusing on modern technologies based on diatoms and integrating them into Iraqi industry, considering them as a new source of income for the country, especially given the abundance of diverse diatoms in our waters.
