A Master's thesis in the Department of Ecology at the College of Science, University of Basra, investigated the impact of environmental factors and pollution on the distribution and spread of the 'Arfaj plant community (Rhanterium epapposum oleif.) in the southern desert of Basra Governorate.
The thesis, submitted by student Zahraa Ali Jaafar, aimed to highlight the importance of the 'Arfaj plant as a medicinal and grazing plant, its significant ecological importance, and its status as one of the most important desert plant communities.
The thesis included a study of the plant's abundance and density, which decreases with increasing temperature. It also noted that R. epapposum is a plant that accumulates pollutants in its tissues.
The thesis recommended conducting a comprehensive study of plant biodiversity and refraining from establishing landfills in areas with vegetation cover, especially for rare and important plant communities in the southern desert.
