The College of Science at the University of Basra/Department of Life Sciences held a seminar entitled: Confronting the danger of environmental pollution... the responsibility of the individual and society. The panel discussion, presented by Dr. Salwa Abdul-Zahra Abdul-Jalil and Dr. Janain Ya'rub, addressed the issue of environmental pollution in the local environment of Basra and its causes. The lecture focused on the emissions from oil extraction operations and the flaring of associated gas without any impact, the neglect of modern technologies in favor of current traditional methods, and the failure to address this phenomenon. This has led to a significant increase in viral diseases in residential areas and oil extraction zones, with the number of cases on the rise, according to official reports from health departments. Oil companies themselves acknowledge that these emissions do not contain the harmful effects of extraction. The lecture also discussed the role of the individual in confronting the dangers of pollution, particularly the role of teachers and professors in raising awareness among students and highlighting the benefits of utilizing relevant applications. The lecture aimed to promote awareness of the individual's role in reducing environmental pollution through positive behaviors.
The lecture also emphasized the role of community institutions (family, university, media, and civil society organizations) in protecting the environment. Highlighting the pivotal role of academics in disseminating a small culture towards working students.
