The College of Science Organizes a Seminar on Algae and Wastewater Treatment

The Department of Ecology at the College of Science, University of Basra, organized a seminar on the application of algae in producing coagulants/flocculations for efficient wastewater treatment.

The seminar, presented by student Fatima Muhannad Taha Rashid, aimed to explain the key role of algae in treating wastewater pollution caused by hydrocarbons and heavy metals. The seminar also addressed the importance of coagulants extracted from algae and their effective role in reducing pollutants from wastewater.

The seminar concluded with several recommendations, most notably the application of coagulants extracted from algae instead of chemical coagulants, given their natural, biodegradable, and non-toxic nature. The seminar also highlighted the potential for the Ministry of Environment to utilize algae extracts in environmental sustainability for pollution removal
