The Department of Ecology at the College of Science, University of Basra, organized a workshop entitled "Microplastic Pollution and Its Effects on Humans and Other Organisms."
The workshop aimed to familiarize attendees with the types of plastic pollutants, their classifications, and their health risks. It also addressed the role of factors in transforming these pollutants into extremely small particles capable of penetrating body tissues and reaching vital organs such as the liver, lungs, and brain.
The workshop, presented by Dr. Makia Mahlal Khalaf and Dr. Ibtihal Musa Jaafar from the Department of Ecology, included an introduction to microplastics, their identification, how these pollutants reach various organisms, including humans, and the resulting health effects.
The workshop recommended the importance of regular testing of food, beverages, and meat, the necessity of avoiding the use of plastic and replacing it with environmentally friendly alternatives, and the development of treatment technologies for these pollutants.
