A Master's thesis in the Department of Ecology at the College of Science, University of Basra, investigated an environmental survey of ground beetles and tested their capacity for bioaccumulation of heavy metals in Basra Governorate.
The study, presented by student Ghadeer Saad Nasser, aimed to identify ground beetles in the governorate, their capacity for heavy metal accumulation, and the impact of environmental factors on bioaccumulation rates.
The study included an environmental survey at four stations, laboratory tests to measure heavy metal levels, soil testing, and sample identification using established taxonomic keys.
The study concluded that the species *Adesmia cancellatus* has the capacity to accumulate heavy metals.
The study recommended expanding the scope of future research to include additional areas in the governorate to monitor changes in heavy metal accumulation and its impact on insect populations, and to conduct detailed studies to investigate the effects of heavy metals on ground beetles in the governorate.
