The College of Science Organizes a Workshop on Types of Salinity in the Shatt al-Arab Waterway

The Department of Ecology at the College of Science, University of Basra, organized a workshop on the types of salinity in the Shatt al-Arab waterway, including variations in composition, classification methods, and measurement techniques. The workshop aimed to explain the molecular properties of water and its high solubility as an excellent chemical solvent, as well as the meaning of laboratory-grade pure water.

The workshop, presented by Dr. Najah Aboud Hassan, a professor emeritus in the Department of Ecology, addressed the challenges of using Shatt al-Arab water in laboratory work, including the preparation of solutions for calibration. It also reviewed the most important geographical and hydrological characteristics of the Shatt al-Arab.

The workshop aimed to present internationally used salinity classification systems, the timing and feasibility of water sampling for salinity measurement, the differences in marine and river salinity composition, and the significant variations in metallic and non-metallic components.
