collegeThe Department of Hydrology at the college of science at the University of Basrah organized a seminar on assessing the carrying capacity of groundwater using satellite data for the eastern region of Maysan governorate in southern Iraq.

The siminar aims to: assess the carrying capacity of groundwater by comparing recharge rates with extraction levels and identify groundwater reservoirs with the highest stable carrying capacity, while developing a mathematical model to predict spatial and temporal changes in groundwater, which supports sustainable management of the water resource . The seminar in which the doctoral student (Ahmed Muhaisen hashoush) lectured included the analysis of the stratigraphic record of the drilled wells and relying on geological reports and by drawing cross-sections in the study area (building a conceptual model). The results showed the existence of two types of groundwater reservoirs ,one of the type confined within the triple-time deposits and the other is not confined within the Quaternary-time deposits, which is the main reservoir in the study area .the test pumping process was conducted for all the two reservoirs to find out and determine the hydraulic characteristics and it turned out through the interpretation of the results that the eastern and northeastern regions have high hydraulic properties with high saturated thickness.
