The Department of geoscience at the college of Science / University of Basrah organized a scientific seminar on the geological and geotechnical study to improve poor sandy soils in the Zubair and Safwan regions of southern Iraq. The study delivered by researcher Azhar Abdul Hamid Abbas aims to determine the geotechnical and chemical properties of sandy soils in the study areas and improve them using different proportions of cement and rubber tire residues, in order to increase their stability and tolerability and make them more suitable for engineering works. The seminar included the presentation of the stages of research work represented by the Office study, field work, which included collecting samples from the quarries of the Zubair and Safwan areas and describing them on site, and laboratory work, which included conducting geotechnical examinations according to American standards (ASTM as well as chemical tests.
