
The College of Science at the University of Basra organized a scientific lecture titled "Breast Cancer Screening" to mark Pink October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The lecture was delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Rafid Abdul-Jabbar Muhammad Ali in the Dr. Abdul-Hussein Al-Ghadab Hall in the Department of Life Sciences on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.
The lecture addressed the importance of early screening for breast cancer and its role in increasing survival rates and reducing mortality rates among women. It also explained risk factors, prevention methods, and the latest diagnostic methods such as self-examination, ultrasound, and mammography.
The lecture also discussed the importance of spreading health awareness within the community and encouraging women to undergo regular checkups to avoid advanced complications of the disease. It also addressed misconceptions and psychological concerns associated with early screening.
The lecture aims to promote health education within the university and support community awareness programs to combat dangerous diseases, particularly breast cancer, which is the most common cancer among women worldwide.
The event included the distribution of awareness posters and educational brochures, including guidelines on self-examination and a healthy lifestyle to prevent breast cancer. It also emphasized the importance of psychological and moral support for those affected.
The lecturer recommended the following:
Commitment to annual early screening for women over the age of forty
Spreading awareness within and outside the university community
Adopting preventive health programs that support a healthy lifestyle
Organizing periodic early detection campaigns within the university
