The University of Basrah organized a thesis defense on expired metformin hydrochloride complexes

The presenter ( Zahraa Fadhil) explained that The thesis entitled “Synthesis, Characterization, and Biological Activity Study of Some Transition Metal Complexes with Expired Metformin” is scientifically valuable and summarized  the most important objectives of the study as:

1.To prepare a series of expired metformin complexes containing transition metal ions through the reaction of expired metformin hydrochloride with platinum (II), platinum (IV), palladium (II), rhodium(III), nickel(II), copper(II), and cobalt(II).

2. To reduce the risks of pollution caused by expired medications by utilizing expired metformin to prepare complexes with important applications, including water purification.)

The results were reached. The findings indicated that this study contributes to the reuse of expired medications by converting them into value-added compounds, thus reducing pharmaceutical waste and promoting sustainable chemistry.

The study recommends (Synthesis, characterization, and biological activity study of new metformin complexes with other metallic ions, along with exploring their potential use in developing new treatments for certain types of cancer.)
