A master's thesis in the Department of Ecology at the College of Science at the University of Basra examined the assessment of the aquatic environment of the Eastern Hammar Marsh using the Biodiversity Safety Index.
The thesis, presented by the student Israa Aziz Mohammed Kazim, aims to determine the level of biodiversity safety of the fish population in the Eastern Hammar Marsh.
The thesis included the preparation of a computer program to facilitate the calculation of all environmental indicators.
The thesis concluded the possibility of applying the Biodiversity Safety Index to Iraqi wetlands and that there is a numerical increase in non-native species represented by the tilapia family with its three types.
The thesis recommended applying the Biodiversity Safety Index to the rest of the Iraqi marshes to determine the level of biodiversity safety in them, including vertebrates and invertebrates, and to enhance environmental protection measures by setting effective controls and laws to limit overfishing, protect aquatic life, and cut reeds and papyrus in the marshes.
