The University of Basrah organizes a seminar entitled (Cultivation of mangroves in the Iraqi marine coasts)

The College of Science at the University of Basrah organized a seminar entitled (Ecophysiological Study of Mangroves Plant  Avicennia marina (Forsk.) Vierh. in Iraqi Marine Coastal South of Basrah) by the graduate student Jihad Meky Majeed
The study aims Research into the possibility of planting gray mangrove trees, Avicennia marina, in Iraqi coastal environments to increase vegetation, maintain coastal soil from erosion, create a suitable environment for marine life, and increase biodiversity. and included :
1. Cultivation of mangroves in different aquatic environments from the Iraqi coasts, and studying the extent to which these plants adapt to climatic changes in these environments.
2. Studying the resistance of these trees to salt stress and oil spills in the Iraqi coastal environment.
and the study was recommended:
1. Expanding the cultivation of mangroves on the Iraqi coasts by selecting coastal areas suitable for the nature of the growth of these plants.
2. Experimenting with other types of mangroves in the Iraqi environment.
3. Converting a private area from the coast of Khor Al-Zubair into a biological experimental site for the purpose of conducting experiments and developing the cultivation of other types of mangroves.
4. Exploiting waste water from desalination plants to create swamps for planting mangroves in order to increase the vegetation cover in Basrah Governorate to counter the phenomenon of global warming.
5. Increasing research on the use of this plant in the phytoremediation of soil and water contaminated with organic and oil pollutants.
