The Department of Chemistry at the University of Basra conducted a master thesis defense entitled : Preparation of some hydrogel polymers containing levofloxacin and study the behavior of its release as antibacterial materials and as wound dressings.
The researcher (Jomana Mohammed) explained that the work of her thesis was devided into two parts:
In the first part, 12 polymeric formulas were prepared from hydrogel containing gelatin, acrylamide, hydroxyethylcellulose, in addition to polyethylene glycol in capsule form. The swelling and release of these gelatinous polymers in distilled water and SGF and SIF were studied. A short-term acute toxicity test on laboratory rats, where the results showed that the polymers are non-toxic and safe for internal use, as well as the effectiveness of releasing these polymers for levofloxacin as an antibacterial for four consecutive days.
As for the second part, wound dressings were prepared from gelatin loaded with levofloxacin, and its effectiveness was tested on rabbits by slitting them and treating them with this type of dressing
